• National Improvement and Leadership Development Board launches new framework for leadership development

• Patient care and value for money improves if NHS staff have ability to develop leadership capabilities
• We welcome the announcement and say we need to create a culture that identifies, nurtures and supports current and future leaders

The National Improvement and Leadership Development Board launched its new “framework for action on improvement and leadership development in NHS-funded services” titled Developing People – Improving Care.

NHS Providers is one of 13 healthcare bodies which sit on the board.

The framework is designed to equip and encourage people in NHS-funded roles to deliver continuous improvement in local health and care systems and to guide team leaders at every level of the NHS to develop a critical set of improvement and leadership capabilities among their staff and themselves.

It has been proven from high performing health and care systems that enabling these capabilities and the opportunity for continuous improvement enables the workforce to improve population health, patient care and value for money.

The new framework will be backed by regulators and inspectors.

Responding to the report, NHS Providers chief executive Chris Hopson said:

We need to create a culture that identifies nurtures and supports current and future leaders.

"In our landmark report, the State of the NHS Provider Sector, we highlighted the importance of supporting and developing good leaders. Today's announcement will help to achieve that goal. NHS leaders at every level are working flat out in the most challenging of circumstances to ensure the best possible care for patients and service users. We need to create a culture that identifies nurtures and supports current and future leaders."
