Senior BBC health journalist to join NHS Providers

15 August 2016

BBC Health Correspondent Adam Brimelow is taking up a key role as head of news at NHS Providers, the leading membership organisation for NHS acute, ambulance, community and mental health services.

Adam has been one of the BBC health team’s key correspondents since 2002, providing news coverage and commentary on health policy, medical research, ethical and legal debates. He regularly appears on major BBC broadcast outlets, including the Radio 4 Today programme and TV bulletins. Adam started working for the BBC in 1989 and had various roles, including as a political reporter and then British Affairs Correspondent at the BBC World Service.

Adam will join NHS Providers at a critical time with NHS services facing unprecedented challenges from constrained funding, rising demand and the need to transform the way care is delivered to patients and service users. NHS Providers helps trusts to respond to these challenges by acting as their public voice, helping shape the system in which they operate, and enabling them to learn from each other. Ninety-six per cent of all NHS trusts are members of NHS Providers – they collectively account for £65 billion of annual expenditure and between them employ more than 928,000 staff.

Commenting on the appointment, Adam said:

“It has been a privilege to work for the BBC, but I am delighted to be going to NHS Providers, which has such a key role to play at this crucial time for the health service. I am extremely excited to be joining such an experienced and professional team.”

NHS Providers director of communications Daniel Reynolds said:

“Adam brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the health sector and how to communicate complex issues to different audiences. He will play a vital role in ensuring we represent the views of acute, ambulance, community and mental health services and that we strengthen our position as the go-to organisation for comment and analysis on the issues affecting providers.”

Adam will start in his new role on 31 October. He will be a member of the organisation’s senior management team, working alongside, among others, chief executive Chris Hopson; policy and strategy director Saffron Cordery; and director of communications Daniel Reynolds.
