It's all about the people - NHS Providers welcome conclusions from Professor Wachter's report

07 September 2016

The National Advisory Group on Health Information Technology in England, chaired by clinician and digital expert Professor Robert Wachter has today published its final report, Making IT work: harnessing the power of health information technology to improve care in England

The report details the group's overall findings and gives 10 implementation recommendations.

NHS Providers welcomes publication of Professor Wachter’s report, and the key message that more resource, time and workforce capability is key to the successful digitisation of the NHS.

Sivakumar Anandaciva, head of analysis, said: “We welcome the conclusions of this detailed independent review which takes on board lessons from the past and highlights the fact that successful digitisation of the NHS cannot be achieved without investing in, supporting and engaging our workforce.

People will require appropriate support to deliver a digitally fit-for-purpose NHS by 2023

“It is important to recognise the need for more realistic financial support and timelines that take into account the individual circumstances of organisations, as well as the key role that building clinical and leadership capability has in delivering success. For the more challenged organisations appropriate support is key, and the announcement of 12 ‘digital exemplar’ organisations to become centres of excellence will be useful to share learning.

“The digital agenda offers considerable benefit for patients and NHS organisations with real potential to drive person-centred care and explore efficiencies. It is important to realise this potential at pace, however as the report recognises ‘digitising effectively is not simply about the technology, it is mostly about the people’ – and people will require appropriate support to deliver a digitally fit-for-purpose NHS by 2023.”
